Five environmental laws harmonized with the support of the project

The Parliament adopted five laws in the area of waste management, whose preparation was supported by UNOPS experts, as part of the targeted capacity building program to the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning in the Environment and Climate Change Sector.

Beside the environmental benefits these laws (Law on Management of Packaging and Waste from Packaging, Law on Management on Electric and Electronic Equipment and Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment, Law on Additional Waste Streams, Law on Producer Extended Responsibility for Management of the Special Waste Stream, Law on management of batteries and accumulators and waste from batteries and accumulators) will bring, they also contribute to further approximation of the EU acquis in the country, as the relevant EU acquis is transposed into the laws. The need for this activity was included in the recommendations and priorities set for Chapter 27 in the European Commission Progress Report 2020 and the adoption of these laws in the waste management sector was recognized in the EC Progress Report for 2021. 

This support was provided under the project support to the Government reform agenda in the accession process and the Activity for targeted capacity building programme in relation to selected chapters of EU acquis for the screening process. Three UNOPS experts worked together with the representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning in the Environment and Climate Change Sector - Waste Management in the preparation of these laws.
